The success of Straight Outta Compton, which was No. 1 at the box office for the third straight week, has reminded Hollywood that people are suckers for movies about the music they love. And while there is no shortage of biopics about individual singers –Ray Charles in Ray, Johnny Cashin Walk the Line, Tina Turner inWhat's Love Got to Do With It,Loretta Lynn in Coal Miner's Daughter, Ritchie Valens in La Bamba, just to name a few – there's a surprising dearth of movies that tell the real life stories of bands. Singer for 60s band The Grass Roots dies in Fla.

Rob Grill, the lead singer of 1960s rock band The Grass Roots, has died near Orlando, an official with the medical examiner's office said Tuesday. He was 67. Grill sang on such hits as "Midnight Confessions," "Temptation Eyes," and "Let's Live for Today." He died Monday at a hospice facility in Lake County, Fla., a suburb of Orlando, said Michael Hensley, director of the medical examiner's office. A woman who answered the phone at Cornerstone Hospice confirmed Grill was a patient but wouldn't release further information, citing privacy concerns. The Grass Roots were a Los Angeles-based band with roots in San Francisco's music scene. They formed in the mid-1960s and went through three incarnations, with band members leaving and others joining, before they recorded a series of hits. W hat's going on Happy Halloween, Oktoberfest, and whatever else you may celebrate this month! (In advance because I may not talk to you before then)  Here’s a little update about what’s been happening on my end and what’s coming up next!   I went down to Nashville for a few days last month and the trip went really well.  I had some long drives there and back but stocked my car with CDs to keep me company.  The newest Gary Clark Jr. album got a lot of plays as did  Sound & Color  by Alabama Shakes and more than one Green Day album.  I also got to finish listening to the first season of Serial ( A gripping and wonderfully made podcast – I recommend checking it out! ), which was long overdue.  I relish any chance I get to go to Nashville despite the lengthy drive so I was really looking forward to this trip.   I spent three full days in town and co-wrote a song with a different songwriter every day I was there.  I’m happy with wh...
