Singer Winehouse joins tragic '27 Club'   Singer Amy Winehouse, who died in London on Saturday, has joined a tragic group of famous rock stars who passed away at the age of 27 -- the notorious "27 Club". Rolling Stones founding member Brian Jones , guitarist Jimi Hendrix , singer Janis Joplin , The Doors singer Jim Morrison and Nirvana frontman are the other major "members" of the ill-fated club. The first to die was Jones, who left the Stones after disagreements with other members. He had problems with drugs and alcohol. Jones drowned in the swimming pool of his estate in Sussex, southern England, in July 1969, and his body was found by his girlfriend. An inquest recorded a verdict of death by misadventure but speculation has continued that he was murdered. Hendrix, the pioneering US guitar wizard whose whose hits included "Purple Haze" and "Hey Joe", followed one year later. Hendrix c

Five years ago this month, I had an itch I needed to scratch...I bought a car, I got a tattoo, nothing was making me 'feel better'.....so, I convinced my oldest we needed a road trip...my all time favorite performer is Edwin McCain....I had always wanted to see him but never got out to....so, I found out that he was playing the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.....and I said to the Bee Girl, come on, we're going on a road trip.....we left the house at 0'dark thirty on a Saturday morning and 8 hours later, we were in Myrtle Beach.....we found a Super 8 motel almost directly across the street from the House of Blues......a few hours nap later, we went to the HOB to catch the show.... Of course, it was A-M-A-Z-N-G..... Edwin, being a South Carolina boy, had an opening act...called   NEEDTOBREATHE They were A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Led by the Reinhart brothers, Bo and Bear, this group really shocked me....I wasnt prepared for their type of music...and every single

So, Apparently Lady Gaga can sing

Image
I just heard a live performance of "Edge of Glory" by Lady Gaga on the Howard Stern Show. It was her and a piano. That's it. I'm here to tell you, she's no joke. I am now a fan of her as a singer/songwriter. As a middle-aged white dude who's favorite bands are the Beatles, Zeppelin, the Stones, Ramones, Sex Pistols, KISS, etc... I didn't think much of the couple Gaga songs I'd heard, just pleasant commercial pop. But this, THIS... WOW, AMAZING! MOVING! GREAT VOICE! AT 8A.M.! As Howard said "one of the best performances on his show ever". Gaga: I will not be so closed minded in the future. You may be an anomaly among pop stars but I will not assume all pop stars are prefab bullshit again. You are the genuine article. Enjoy, Dave (contributing blogger, Together Music Friends)

Cheap Trick escape as Ottawa rock stage collapses

Image
In 1978, I was an excited ninth grader, on my way in the back of my family's station wagon (you know which kind Im talking about, the WALLY WAGON, the one with the two seats that popped out in the way back and what even sucked even more was this station wagon was POWDERED BLUE...but thankfully WITHOUT the paneling on the sides).....anywho....my daddy was the bomb and took me and 6 friends to see FOGHAT and opening act CHEAP TRICK .....I knew about them from the songs Dream Police, and Surrender......they actually rocked it more than I imagined.....one of the little sidebar memories from that concert was that my crush went with us and he and I ended up making out sitting on those danged little seats, praying to all that was holy that my dad wouldnt look into the rear view mirror and see what we were doing....;-) Im happy that the band was unhurt in this freak accident.... OTTAWA (Reuters) - Veteran U.S. band Cheap Trick escaped unharmed when a storm blew down much of the stage

Beatles' 1st US concert photos fetch $360K in NYC

Image
Who would have thought that a simple CLICK of a camera would record HISTORY IN THE MAKING??....This story is fascinating....maybe one day, with all the pictures I take of musicians, that maybe just one day, they can be worth a little something...... NEW YORK (AP) — In 1964, an enterprising 18-year-old snapped pictures of the Beatles ' momentous first U.S. concert in Washington, D.C. On Wednesday, Christie's auction house said it sold 50 silver gelatin prints that the photographer, Mike Mitchell, made from the negatives for $361,938. The images, plus photos from another Beatles concert, had been estimated to fetch a total of $100,000. The Beatles played their first U.S. concert at the Washington Coliseum on Feb. 11, 1964, two days after their debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show." Read more   here

Campbell shines in 1st show since Alzheimer's news

Image
As a little girl, Glen Campbell was my crush...he and Elvis...I watched the first version of True Grit just to see him in it....My parents had this album and I remember listening to it all the time on one of those stereos that held the records on one side, the player and the radio on the other - I wore that stereo out (blew the speakers)....My friend Rob Fahey performs WICHITA LINEMAN at some of his accoustic shows....I am sooo sad by the news that he has alzheimers but I am happy about this news of him being able to play out and with his daughters.... BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — Glen Campbell leaned over his blue electric guitar, plucked a few strings and made a sour face. "Dadgum it," he said. Campbell fiddled a few seconds longer while standing backstage at the IP Casino and finally found a perfect D chord. "There it is," he said, before turning on his heel and marching into the spotlight. He launched into " Gentle on my Mind " and — without so much as c

What is your FAVORITE ALL TIME SONG?

Image
I am just curious if any of my readers (even if I have any readers)...what their favorite song is.... Quite clearly, my favorite song is "Raised on the Radio" by the Ravyns .  It is tattooed on my ankle..... The Ravyns are and always will be one of MY FAVORITE bands.....I found them during a time in my life that I was having some issues - and their music just spoke to me.....the members of the group have gone on to other musical adventures which I go to see as much as I can and they all are still friends of mine....and about once a year, they get together and have a reunion which I always try to support! The song "Raised on the Radio" was featured on the Fast Times at Ridgemont High soundtrack. Wikipedia:  The soundtrack album, Fast Times at Ridgemont High: Music from the Motion Picture, peaked at #54 on the Billboard album chart. The soundtrack contains many quintessential 1980s rock artists. Several of the movie's songs were released as singles, inclu

Chart Watch Extra: One hit wonders

Image
I love these lists - makes me think back to the time and era of these songs....though I will admit having to youtube a few..... . Most of the record-setting achievements spotlighted in Joel Whitburn's newly-published reference book Top Pop Singles 1955-2010 are positive: artists with the most chart hits, singles that spent the most weeks at #1, and the like. But there's one list in the book that no artist would want to appear on: the "one-hit wonders" of the rock era. These are artists who had one top 10 hit and then never returned to (or even bubbled under) the Hot 100. And who's the biggest one-hit wonder of all? Daniel Powter , whose 2006 smash "Bad Day" topped the chart for five weeks. Powter is the only artist in the rock era to spend as many as five weeks at #1 with his first and only chart hit. Rather than go all the way back to 1955, let's zero in on the more recent past. And let's raise the bar a little and focus on artist

Singer for 60s band The Grass Roots dies in Fla.

Image
Rob Grill, the lead singer of 1960s rock band The Grass Roots, has died near Orlando, an official with the medical examiner's office said Tuesday. He was 67. Grill sang on such hits as "Midnight Confessions," "Temptation Eyes," and "Let's Live for Today." He died Monday at a hospice facility in Lake County, Fla., a suburb of Orlando, said Michael Hensley, director of the medical examiner's office. A woman who answered the phone at Cornerstone Hospice confirmed Grill was a patient but wouldn't release further information, citing privacy concerns. The Grass Roots were a Los Angeles-based band with roots in San Francisco's music scene. They formed in the mid-1960s and went through three incarnations, with band members leaving and others joining, before they recorded a series of hits. Grill joined in 1967 and the group disbanded in 1975. One of the members was Creed Bratton, who now plays the exceedingly eccentric Cree

Promoters wary after Missouri music festival bust

Apparently, the name SCHWAG doesnt seem to be a good name for your band..... schwag ~ adj. Term used to describe low grade marijuana. This type of marijuana is usually brown, seedy, dry. The term is also used by many pot heads to describe anything that is low grade.  noun. low grade marijuana     COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Jimmy Tebeau figured a shuttered youth camp deep in the Missouri Ozarks would be the perfect venue for his Grateful Dead tribute band — and to host other touring musicians and thousands of free-spirited fans. Since 2004, his 350-acre campground — named Camp Zoe — has featured performances from his own band, the Schwag , as well as top acts such as the Roots and Los Lobos. But the music recently stopped at Zoe, and now the dreadlocked dad — once considered a savvy impresario among concert promoters and festival organizers in the lucrative improvisational music world— is accused of being a purveyor of an illicit drug scene. Lady Gaga Egged Over Wheelchair Stunt

Image
A group of  angry fans threw eggs  at  Lady Gaga  in response to her recent appearance on stage in Sydney, Australia rolling around in a wheelchair. Though the throwers missed Gaga herself, a few eggs hit members of her entourage. It is unclear why audience members had the eggs in the first place, however. I liked Lady Gaga when POKER FACE came out.....but the more time that passes, the more I think she's just a crack pot..... Read more here....

Can we say DUMB A-S-S??

Rocker accused of pharmacy robbery before show MANSFIELD, Mass. (AP) — The bass player for a rock band has been arrested and charged with robbing a Massachusetts pharmacy of prescription painkillers just hours before a show. Attleboro police say Michael Todd , bassist for Coheed and Cambria , entered the Walgreen's pharmacy after 1 p.m. on Sunday and showed the pharmacist a note on his phone saying he had a bomb. Police say the 30-year-old Todd, of Anaheim, Calif., then made off with six bottles of Oxycontin and fled in a cab headed to the Comcast Center in Mansfield, where his band was to open for Soundgarden that night. He was arrested at the concert hall before the show, and the band played without him. He's scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Attleboro District Court. The band's website says the tour will continue.

The museum behind the music: The Calvert Marine Museum

Image
The Museum Behind the Music Mixing rock, country and comedy to feed Bubbles and Squeak For a quarter-century, music fed Calvert Marine Museum’s otters and salaried its staff. In service of the museum’s twin causes of local history and science, Los Lobos howled, Crosby Stills and Nash harmonized, Bob Dylan growled and the Allman Brothers jammed. Calvert brought Southern Maryland the big names of rock and country music, and if some of them were slightly off their prime, the fans didn’t care. The classics were balanced with young performers like Travis Tritt, Big & Rich, Trace Adkins and Montgomery Gentry — at the height of their popularity. Soundgarden reunion tour relives band's '90s glory

Image
TORONTO (Reuters) - More than 14 years after Soundgarden broke up, the Seattle rockers launched their reunion tour in Toronto on Saturday, taking 16,000 nostalgic fans back to the glory days of the 1990s grunge era. The foursome raced through 21 songs in two hours at the Molson Amphitheatre, focusing mostly on the riff-laden dark material that transformed them into MTV darlings.  In contrast to the tense final show of their last tour in 1997, the scene on stage seemed particularly more relaxed.
