Tom Petty takes on Bachmann over "American Girl"

Image
GOOD FOR TOM PETTY!! NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - It's not even 2012 yet but election season is in full bloom. And with it comes a new political ritual: First, a Republican candidate attempts to score cultural points by choosing a popular song for a political commercial or a rally. Next, a musician complains about such unauthorized use. Finally, politician says, "Sorry!" Up first in the 2012 war is a developing dispute between singer-songwriter Tom Petty and Michele Bachmann. On Monday, Bachmann officially announced her candidacy for U.S. president. She left the stage as Petty's "American Girl" blared over the loudspeaker. Uh-oh. Read more   here

R.I.P. Clarence Clemmons

Image
Clarence Clemons, the larger-than-life saxophone player for the E Street Band who was one of the key influences in Bruce Springsteen's life and music through four decades, has died. He was 69.   Clemons died Saturday night after being hospitalized about a week ago following a stroke at his home in Singer Island, Fla. Springsteen acknowledged the dire situation earlier this week, but said then he was hopeful. He called the loss "immeasurable." "We are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly 40 years," Springsteen said on his website. "He was my great friend, my partner and with Clarence at my side, my band and I were able to tell a story far deeper than those simply contained in our music. His life, his memory, and his love will live on in that story and in our band." Read more HERE

Get well Soon Clarence Clemons!

Image
It seems that Clarence Clemons' stroke is very serious . I have always enjoyed Bruce Springsteen and his band...Im not a rabid fan as some are but I do like his music....I remember when my friend Leah, who worked at THE COOLEST RECORD STORE in DC in the early 80's, Georgetown Penguin Feather, ran a contest for the BORN IN THE USA debut.  It was to create a window display for the record and Leah created a very simplistic display - she had a pair of jeans, a white sleeveless tee shirt and a red baseball hat in the back pocket and the record album (yes, the ALBUM as in VINYL) was all around and she may have had an American Flag somewhere in the display.....and she WON the contest!  And the prize was an all expense paid trip to see Bruce and his band - dont remember where but she was psyched cos she was THE RABID BRUCE FAN!....She did get to meet him and it was the beginning of her career in the music business....many many years later, we are still buddies, albeit on FACEBOOK a

Amos Lee

Image
There really are no words that I can say about  Amos Lee . .at least here on this blog - because this man, for lack of a better term - his music can make me weak at the KNEES...and all what that implies.... Lee recently performed at Bonnaroo . .and I am kicking myself in the ass for not going to see him when he was here in DC back in April - his smooth, silky, lonesome voice, his lyrics, his soulful stylings are usually reserved for men who are older, who have been in the business a lot longer .... for 33 years old, he has the voice and the talent of men who are 20 years older and have seasoned their talent.....he is soulful, he's a jazz performer  -- he even has a bit of folksy to his stylings...he's all around and an incredible performer......and he's an accoustic guitar player which makes him TOPS...I love me some accoustic guitar..... He has put out 4 albums -- and I have two of them - just havent taken the time to download the others - I love every song on the two I

Journey tries for "more stadium rock" with new "Eclipse"

Image
I found this article about Journey....and I had to say something...maybe Neal Schon should just give it up... My 15 year old loves Journey....and as much as she loves Journey, she has no desire to see them WITHOUT Steve Perry...and they are touring this summer with Foreigner - but, nah, she's gonna pass...and this is an 80's music teenager...loves it all.... Now I know, if you read the internet, watch any Journey music show on cable, they are say that Steve Perry left on his own -  And Im ok with that - but, to me, he is the VOICE of Journey - the voice that sold millions of albums and made Journey the area rock band it WAS.... Not IS now... They've gone through several singers and now they have a lead singer that sounds like Steve Perry, or so Ive read..... Call me stubborn, but I have no desire to see this 'band'.... This is the band I want to see......

13 Cool Music Docs For 2011...Billboard Magazine

Image
I found this story on Billboard - and Ive always enjoyed reading Billboard, having started reading it when I worked in a record store in the early 80's... There are actually a few of these documentaries I would enjoy seeing....Marley, Rejoice and Shout, and  Back and Forth (the Foo Fighters) would be something I would like to see... Read more Here

Hot Spot - Jammin' Java

Image
I used to hear about   Jammin' Java all the time since I was always out and about and listening to music.... Ive always seen what has been familiar to me...Ive enjoyed the bar bands here in Southern Maryland and Ive always gone up to Baltimore to see my good friend  Rob Fahey , one of the best songwriters and acoustic guitar players around.....(more on Rob at a later time)....Ive been into DC to see bands that Ive known of, known or bands that were once very popular and now are doing the smaller club circuit...I love the Birchmere, The Rams Head Franchises, and lots of local little watering holes between Southern Maryland and Baltimore.... Back in November, a favorite musician, Michael Tolcher, was listing on his facebook page that he was going to be performing shows here on the east coast and to inquire within....so, being as I was a huge fan of his music, I inquired within.....he sent me a very nice email and told me that he was going to be hosting a house show with his
